Top Comics to Buy for March 9, 2022

By Zack Quaintance — I really enjoyed putting together this list of the top comics to buy for March 9, 2022, which includes a new series spinning out of The Kill Lock, the latest issue of Monkey Meat, and some strong superhero stories from both DC Comics and Marvel. That’s quite a bit of variety, and all of it welcomed. So, as always, you can check out the full set of pics below, and don’t forget to return to the site this week for full reviews of some of the highlights.

Enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for March 9, 2022

PICK OF THE WEEK
Kill Lock: The Artisan Wraith #1 (of 7)
Writer/Artist:
Livio Ramondelli
Letterer: Shawn Lee
Editor: David Mariotte
Publisher: IDW Publishing
The Kill Lock unified four criminals in a quest to escape their seemingly inevitable, linked deaths. They managed to escape destruction by merging their consciousnesses, and now one of the smartest-and most malicious-bots in the universe has an unbreakable body and a planet at his command. Homeworld won't allow it, and so two of the deadliest assassins in the universe are tasked to kill the Artisan Wraith.
Why It’s Cool: I absolutely loved the first miniseries that this is spinning out of, dubbed simply, Kill Lock. Armed with really vibrant and human characters (who are actually robots), it tells an excellent and difficult to predict contained story loaded with dark humor. I didn’t realize a follow-up was on the way, but reading it this week, I was blown away. This book continues some of the ideas in the first story, just taking them in entirely new directions with new robots who add to the world. It’s really well-done, and I’m very excited to see where it all goes. Look for a full review coming Wednesday…

Monkey Meat #3
Writer/Artist/Letterer:
Juni Ba
Publisher: Image Comics
Our anthology becomes a fairy tale about a little magician delivery boy on the most important delivery of his life. One involving a troll, fairies who kidnap babies, and colorful magic action! Be warned, however, that though you may be thrilled, you may also get your heart broken...
Why It’s Cool: One of my favorite series of 2022 continues this week with a third standalone issue that tackles many of the themes of the first two, namely the cost of individual humanity when the world comes to be dominated by gigantic corporations. It’s all in here once again, Juni Ba’s singularly excellent cartooning, the smart writing, and the very stylish aesthetic.

Naomi Season 2 #1
Writers:
Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker
Artist: Jamal Campbell
Letterer: Wes Abbott
Publisher: DC Comics
She's back! Naomi returns to the pages of her own series to uncover the truth behind the new mysteries around herself and her powers. The entire creative team (Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker, and Jamal Campbell) behind the critically acclaimed and Eisner Award-nominated debut series has returned to answer all the questions that surround Naomi, her legacy, and her place in the DC Universe pantheon. Guest-starring Black Adam, Superman, and the Justice League, plus the return of...Zumbado! Soon to be a CW television show from Ava DuVernay!
Why It’s Cool: This new book picks up right where the original Naomi left off, complete with the absolutely killer artwork by Jamal Campbell. There’s a nice focus on how Naomi is dealing with the revelations of the first series in this new book, and I’m really intrigued to see where it all goes.

Sabretooth #2
Writer:
Victor LaValle
Artist: Leonard Kirk
Colorist: Rain Beredo
Letterer: VC’s Cory Petit
Publisher:
Marvel Comics
Professor X promised there would be no prisons on Krakoa. Sabretooth was the first in the hole, but now he welcomes five more mutants to his own private hell. What laws did they break? Are they ready for what they'll find? No. No, they're not.
Why It’s Cool: Up there with The Thing for the best book being published by Marvel Comics in 2022, this second issue continues to trippy abstract exploration of the toll of prisons on a population, with Victor Creed (of course) at its center. There is a whole new wave of X-Men comics on the way, giving us the full glimpse of where these books are going post-Jonathan Hickman, but this one remains interesting just in the context of House of X/Powers of X alone.

Trial of the Amazons #1
Writers:
Stephanie Williams, Vita Ayala, Joelle Jones, Michael W. Conrad, and Becky Cloonan
Artists: Laura Braga, Skylar Patridge, Joelle Jones, and Elena Casagrande
Colorists: Romulo Fajardo Jr., and Jordie Bellaire
Letterer: Pat Brosseau
Publisher: DC Comics
After the events of Nubia & the Amazons, the dangers of Doom's Doorway have found their way to Man's World and garnered the attention of not one, but all three Amazonian tribes. The Bana-Mighdall consider it to be a weakness in the current regime and have decided to return to the shores of Themyscira to stake their claim over the island. Little do they know, the Esquecida are not far behind, but instead looking for help to combat the evil unleashed. Tempers rise and swords are brandished as the women argue about the best course of action.
Now Queen Nubia must show them all the way to peace by calling for one of the most famous Amazon traditions...the Contest. Who among them is worthy of leading them into the future? Find out as the bravest, wisest, and fiercest warriors compete to be champion of all the Amazons!
Why It’s Cool: This storyline has been building for months across a number of Wonder Woman comics, and now it’s finally here, brought to us by the same creative teams that have laid the groundwork. What’s especially cool about this event to me is that Wonder Woman as a corner of the DC Universe is really changing and changing rapidly. It really feels like what happens in this story can have long-term implications, with the mean that the book will return to being in flux. And that’s exciting.
