Kickstarter Comics Tip: The Exhaustion

By Zack Quaintance — In a normal week, the last post of the day for this site goes up around 3 p.m. Eastern Time. I’m often proud that this happens so reliably. I don’t know if anyone has ever noticed, but, damn it, it means something to me. This, however, has not been the case with this week, no where close, not with the advent of my new Kickstarter campaign for Next Door, the book that gave rise to this blog.

No, this week I have been late late late with these blog posts, often writing them at the end of an exhausted day as a way to decompress and share what’s on my mind. It speaks to what I think is one of the pieces of advice you hear from Kickstarter creators that’s easiest to ignore…give yourself more time to focus on your Kickstarter than you think you need.

I personally heard from anyone who’d ever run a Kickstarter (as well as some folks who simply know people who have run a Kickstarter) that it was going to take up way more time than I expected, and, to be fair to myself, I gave myself two hours on Monday dedicated to Kickstarter Stuff on my calendar for the day. Looking back with the wisdom of four whole days later, this now seems absolutely laughable. And that brings me to today’s…

KICKSTARTER COMICS TIP: …take the first day of your Kickstarter off of work, off of family, off of literally every responsibility you possibly can. Honestly, even finding time for lunch on Day One was a challenge for me. I stumbled bleary down to my kitchen at like 3 p.m. to eat half a can of soup. Really, if I had to do it over again, I’d have stacked bottled water and Cliff bars by the computer, just to make sure I had hydration and sustenance easily on hand while working. Anyway, I’m hesitant to belabor this tip today past what I’ve already written…because the truth is you’re not going to listen. I don’t know if you even can. It’s really hard to anticipate.

Phew. I’m off to recover. The good news is that the work gets less and easier each day. Tomorrow’s blog is one I’m really excited about…a Q&A with the artist of Next Door, Pat Skott.
